!UPWARD BOUND!
Leading Congregations Through Change, Decisions, and Conflict
Advanced Training for Congregational Development
January 5-9, 2004
San Diego, California
registration ends: Dec. 5, 2003
Transformational leadership begins with a transformed leader.
!Upward Bound! addresses the personal work leaders need to do in order to lead in challenging times of growth and change.
!Upward Bound! is for the congregational development leader who is ready to address the following situations:
· your primary goals are sabotaged by competing agendas
· emotional responses are disproportionate to the situation
· there is a negative force that drains time and emotional energy
· there is more going on than appears at the surface
· meetings end, but not everyone agrees what was decided
The work is personal, intensive, and transforming. During the five day training you will:
►Learn how to examine both a conflicted situation and your place in it.
►Explore your individual awareness of how you receive approval and support.
►Understand the different levels of needs and their implications for congregational behavior.
►Develop skills to stop participating in destructive games and negative cycles.
!Upward Bound! Advanced Congregational Development Training is designed for the primary congregational leader who has attended either a Start Up!Start Over! Congregational Development Seminar, another equivalent training, or has tangible experience in this work. The goal is to heighten your awareness and skills required to lead congregations in times of change and transition. The training is highly interactive, includes teaching, role-play, conversation, and personal reflection. You will be invited to carefully explore your individual awareness and competence, examine the congregational setting in which you lead, and apply new models of interpretation to effect change.
Note: !Upward Bound! does not provide therapy or a private consultation. If you are currently involved in a seriously conflicted personal or professional situation an individual consultation may better serve your needs.
Space is limited to the first 35 registrants. Registration deadline December 5, 2003.
12 CEUs available.
!Upward Bound! is sponsored by the Office of Congregational Development and coordinated in partnership with the Episcopal Church Building Fund. To learn more call 800-334-7626, ext. 6003.

Charles Fulton has been a national consultant on issues of congregational health and development for over a decade. He developed an application of the theory of congregational life cycle to help congregations plan appropriate ministries for today and plan for their future. His use of humor and irreverent style encourages truth telling and has earned him the reputation of the James Carville of the Episcopal Church. He also developed a process for group decision making that minimizes conflict. He leads the popular training event Start Up!Start Over! Congregational Development Seminar and co-chairs an ecumenical network of church growth leaders.
In 2001 Charles Fulton was appointed the Director of Congregational Development for the Episcopal Church. The Offices of Stewardship, Small Church, New Church Development, and Research report to this position. He was also appointed by the Presiding Bishop to coordinate the national churches’ response to the 2020 Resolution to double the membership of the Episcopal Church by the year 2020.
Charles continues to serve as the President of the Episcopal Church Building Fund, an agency that since 1880 has fulfilled the mission to “Help Build the Church, and Helping the Church to Build”. Prior to coming to the ECBF he was trained in architecture and served for 15 years as rector of a pastoral size congregation that he doubled to a program congregation. He was called to the ECBF in 1987, assuming the role of President in 1990. Charles created a planning process for congregations engaged in building projects, authoring A Congregational Planning Process. He formulated an understanding of how buildings can be tools for evangelism and created a provocative analysis of the ways we gather people for work and worship in the church. To address these topics he authored The Church for Common Prayer, A Statement on Worship Space for the Episcopal Church and was the Associate Producer of the video “Churches for Common Prayer”. He has designed the liturgical space at two General Conventions.

President and founder of Miler & Associates, Inc., a consulting and educational resource to non-profits, for-profit, and religious institutions and systems as well as to individuals. She is known as a gifted teacher and presenter, weaving together spiritual and practical elements into new forms.
Miller’s consulting career began in the mid-1970’s as she became involved in the early work of evaluating congregations and institutions in areas of growth, development and redevelopment. Her on-going study of organizational effectiveness, behaviors, and systems led her to focus on organizational diagnosis and redesign. She has consulted with institutions of all sizes, working at all levels, from CEO’s and Bishops to employees and congregation members.
Today, Miller concentrates her efforts on coaching and training leaders, assisting organizations in defining their vision, and leading them in developing the strategies necessary for the accomplishment of that vision. Rather than impose a pre-formed structure, she enables the institution or individual to design the most appropriate response to their future. Miller also provides staff assessment and employee training, process design for major projects and meetings, and is known as a lively and exceptional retreat and seminar leader with specialties in personal and spiritual growth.
Susy Miller is a co-leader of the Start Up!Start Over! Congregational Development Seminar, sponsored by the Episcopal Church Center. She continues to serve the Episcopal House of Bishops as their process consultant, as she has since 1990.
